Description
The Franko Y is a sandal built the way a shoe is built. One wide band of grained leather across the foot, a leather toe post, a brushed metal buckle to set the fit, and underneath, a footbed moulded to the shape of a foot rather than cut flat.
It is made at our own factory in Chennai, where we have been working leather for three generations. The straps are full-grain hide, chosen for a pebbled grain that softens with wear instead of stiffening. The buckle is metal, not moulded — it takes the daily pull of tightening and loosening without cracking.
The footbed does the real work. A raised arch under the instep, a deep cup at the heel, a ridge at the toe: the foot sits in the sandal rather than sliding around on top of it. Under that, a thick moulded platform with a deep wave tread that grips wet tile, absorbs shock on concrete, and weighs almost nothing.
Wear it at home, to the shop, on the beach, through an airport. It is the pair you reach for without thinking, and the one that still looks like something after a season of it.
Care: wipe the straps with a dry cloth and condition with a neutral leather cream now and then. Rinse the sole under a tap and air-dry. Do not machine wash or leave in direct sun.
